Abbott Boats
Abbott Boats Inc. was a renowned Canadian sailboat manufacturer founded by Bill Abbott Sr. in Sarnia, Ontario, in the 1960s. Starting with wooden Nordic Folkboats and Olympic-class Dragons, Abbott transitioned to fiberglass construction, becoming a pioneer in affordable racer-cruisers for the Great Lakes and beyond. The company produced around 40–50 Folkboats and Dragons before launching its signature line in 1964 with the Abbott 22. At its peak, Abbott built up to one boat per day, gaining international acclaim for designs like the Abbott 33, a modified Danish Scan-Kap 99 tailored for North American waters. Production emphasized performance, simplicity, and one-design racing, with models like the 33 forming active fleets. Abbott ceased operations in the late 1980s/early 1990s amid market shifts, but its legacy endures through owner associations and well-preserved boats. Bill Abbott Sr. (1925–2022) was a legendary figure, honored for his craftsmanship and contributions to Canadian yachting.
