Yamaha 30-2

Description

The Yamaha 30-2 (also known as Yamaha 30 Mk II or Y-30 Mk II) is a Japanese-built fiberglass racer-cruiser sloop designed by Peter Norlin and produced by Yamaha Motor Company (Japan) from ~1982 to the mid-1980s. Approximately ~50–100 units were built as an evolution of the earlier Yamaha 30-1 (1978–1982), retaining the hull based on Norlin's Scampi 30 Mk III but relocating the engine from the forward V-berth to a traditional aft position under the cockpit. This change improved weight distribution (reducing bow-down trim), simplified maintenance (shorter shaft, no pillow blocks), and enhanced stern balance for better helm feel, while a tall rig version remained available for light-air performance. Known for premium Japanese build quality, seaworthiness, and IOR racing credentials, the 30-2 is a solid coastal/offshore choice with a cult following for its solid (non-cored) decks, teak interiors, and responsive sailing—though some note increased weather helm compared to predecessors.
