Tartan 412
Description
The Tartan 412 is a refined 40'7" (12.4 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Tim Jackett (with Sparkman & Stephens influences) as an enhanced cruiser-racer, extending the successful Tartan 40 with 11" higher freeboard for increased interior headroom, improved stability, and better offshore capability while retaining the brand's hallmark balance of performance and comfort for coastal or blue water sailing with a small crew. Built by Tartan Marine in Painesville, Ohio, from 1989 to 1990 with only 8 hulls produced, it features a Scheel keel (shoal draft: 5'1" / 1.54 m) or deep fin keel (7'6" / 2.29 m) with skeg-hung rudder for protected steering, masthead sloop rig with double spreaders and lines led aft to clutches, and a modern hull with flat midsections transitioning to slack bilges for efficient planning and pointing—delivering a hull speed of 7.5 knots and a moderate displacement/length ratio of 260 that classifies it as a moderate-weight performer, very stable/stiff with good righting capability and a sail area/displacement ratio of 17.0 for responsive handling in a breeze, though best suited for coastal cruising due to modest original fuel capacity (owners often upgrade tanks). Constructed with hand-laid fiberglass hull and balsa-cored deck for durability, the oiled teak interior sleeps 6–7 in a spacious two-cabin/two-head layout with V-berth forward, saloon settees, U-shaped galley, nav station, quarter berth, and angled bulkheads maximizing usable space, praised for its airy feel and liveaboard potential,
