Swan 36 (S&S Design)
Description
Swan 36 (S&S #1710): Nautor's Legendary First Model The Swan 36 is a groundbreaking 35'8" (10.9 m) fiberglass monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #1710) and built by Nautor Swan in Pietarsaari, Finland, from 1967 to 1970, with 59 hulls produced—marking the debut of the iconic Swan brand and revolutionizing production yachting by combining racing performance, blue water seaworthiness, and luxury craftsmanship in a series-built package. Launched under founder Pekka Koskenkylä’s vision to create "the finest yachts afloat," the Swan 36 introduced hand-laid fiberglass hulls, teak interiors, and IOR-influenced lines with a fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, and masthead sloop rig, delivering exceptional speed (hull speed 7.1 knots) and stability (45% ballast ratio) that dominated early offshore races—including the 1971 Fastnet Race (class win by Vanina) and multiple Round Britain and Ireland victories. Its lightweight yet robust construction (displacement/length ratio ~220) and responsive helm made it a favorite for shorthanded cruising and family sailing, while the cozy interior—sleeping 5–6 with V-berth, saloon settees, galley, and quarter berth—set the standard for Swan’s signature warm teak joinery and ergonomic layout.
