South Coast 26
Description
The South Coast 26 is an American 25.83-foot trailerable masthead sloop designed by Jim Monroe (also referred to as James Monroe) as a cruiser and first built in 1974 (with main production starting around 1977) by South Coast Seacraft Co. of Shreveport, Louisiana. Approximately 80 boats were constructed in fiberglass before the company wound down operations in the early 1980s (part of the builder’s later models after its more successful South Coast 22). Both center-cockpit and aft-cockpit versions were offered, with a lifting keel for easy trailering, beaching, and shallow-water access. It was positioned as an affordable pocket cruiser with basic accommodations for 4–5 people (V-berth, settees, small galley/head), outboard or optional inboard power, and a practical layout emphasizing weekend cruising or coastal sailing. Key features include solid early fiberglass construction, cast iron ballast, and forgiving handling suitable for a small crew or family—though reported displacement and ballast figures varied slightly between brochures (typically light to moderate for the era).
