Sigma 38 OOD
Description
The Sigma 38 (officially the Sigma 38 OOD – Offshore One Design) is a 38-foot fractional sloop designed by David Thomas and built by Marine Projects Ltd. (Sigma Yachts) in Plymouth, UK, from 1985 to 1993 (with the final hull completed by Northshore Yachts). A total of 125 boats were constructed, establishing it as a successful and enduring one-design class with strong fleets in the UK, Ireland, and elsewhere; many examples remain actively raced and cruised today thanks to its robust fiberglass construction, balanced performance, and practical layout for 6–8 crew. It was developed as a fast cruiser-racer with offshore capability (including proven Fastnet experience in the broader Sigma family), offering responsive handling, good stability, and a rewarding sailing character often described as "a sheep in wolf's clothing" – deceptively quick and powerful while remaining manageable for smaller crews.
