Blanchard Senior Knockabout
Description
The Senior Knockabout (also known as the Blanchard Senior Knockabout or Blanchard Knockabout Sr.) is a classic 26-foot wooden monohull daysailer/cruiser designed by Norman Blanchard Sr. (with early collaboration noted with Ben Seaborn in some accounts) and built by the family-owned Blanchard Boat Co. (Blanchard Boatworks) in Seattle, Washington. Development began around 1932–1933 in response to local sailors seeking an affordable alternative to the expensive Star class; production of the Senior model ran primarily from 1933 to 1947 (with some references citing first boats in 1935), using traditional wood-planked construction (Western Red Cedar on oak frames) with a fin keel and rudder on skeg. A total of 97 boats were built, making it one of Blanchard’s best-sellers; approximately 70 were reported still in existence as of the mid-2010s, with many actively raced or cruised in the Pacific Northwest (including fleets on Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands). A smaller open Junior Knockabout (20 ft) was also produced as a scaled-down variant.
