Seaward 23
Description
The Seaward 23 is an American trailerable sailboat designed by Nick Hake as a compact pocket cruiser, suitable for solo, couple, or small family use on small lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. Introduced in 1981 by Hake Yachts (initially under Starboard Yacht Company) in Miami, Florida, during the trailerable sailboat boom, it was Hake's early evolution of his Slipper 17, targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight, easy-to-launch construction and centerboard for shallow drafts. Production was low volume (estimated <100 units), ending around 1983 as Hake rebranded to Seaward Yachts and shifted to larger models. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a centerboard keel and transom-hung rudder for stable, responsive handling, a narrow beam for easy trailering, and a fractional sloop rig for light-air performance and simplicity, with a low displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a moderate ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts, though its low righting moment limits it to calm conditions.
