Scudabout
Description
The Scudabout (sometimes listed as Scudabout Sailing Dinghy or Peterborough Scudabout) is a classic vintage wooden sailing dinghy produced by the Peterborough Canoe Company in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The company, founded in 1893 (as a merger/evolution from earlier firms), was one of Canada's most famous wooden canoe and small boat builders from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. They specialized in cedar-strip (longitudinal strip-planked) construction for lightweight, durable canoes, skiffs, sailing dinghies, and even some powerboats—famous for their quality craftsmanship and use in camps, resorts, racing, and recreation. The Scudabout was part of their line of small sailing dinghies in the 1930s–1950s era (catalog references peak in the 1950s, with examples from the 1930s–1950s). It was positioned as a slightly larger, faster sibling to the smaller Pal sailing dinghy—designed for children, beginners, family fun, or light racing in protected waters (lakes, bays, rivers).
