Santana 20

Description

The Santana 20 was designed by naval architect W. Shad Turner and first built in 1976 by W.D. Schock Corp in Corona, California, amid the 1970s–1980s boom in high-performance keelboats. Schock, founded in 1946 by W.D. Schock, had a history of innovative designs like the Santana 22 (1966) and Santana 27 (1967), both named after the founder's favorite mountain peak. The 20 emerged as a sporty evolution, blending racing DNA with cruising practicality to capture the trailerable market. Production continued steadily until 1996, when Schock redesigned the deck for a more ergonomic, open-transom cockpit with rolled edges (inspired by the 505 dinghy), improving comfort without altering performance—adding about 90 new hulls to the fleet. This update addressed racer feedback for better legroom and water shedding, keeping older boats competitive through class rules. The model thrived in regions like Southern California and inland lakes, with fleets racing in open ocean or reservoirs. Schock ceased operations in the early 2000s, but the Santana 20's legacy endures through the active Santana 20 Class Association
