RL 24 Mark III
Description
The RL 24 Mark III is a popular Australian trailerable sailboat from the iconic RL 24 series, designed and built by Rob Legg (Rob Legg Yachts Pty Ltd, based in Victoria, Australia). The RL 24, introduced in the early 1970s, became Australia's most successful trailer yacht with over 500–640 built (mostly 1973–1988), emphasizing fast, safe, family-friendly sailing that's easy to rig, launch, and trail. It's a one-design class still active in racing (nationals, states) and cruising. The Mark III (introduced around 1980, with some early examples from late 1970s) improved on earlier marks: New deck mold for increased headroom (better standing room in the cabin). Interior alterations for more comfort and usability (e.g., refined layout, better storage). Retained self-righting capability with built-in buoyancy for safety (floats even if swamped). Swing keel (lifting centerboard) for shallow draft and trailering. It builds on the Mark I (original, ~1973) and Mark II (upgraded hull/centerboard from ~1976), while the later Mark IV shifted toward racing with a fully battened main and performance tweaks.
