Piver AA 48 Trimaran

Piver AA 48 Trimaran

Description

The Piver AA-48 Trimaran (also listed as Piver AA 48 or AA-48 Tri) is the largest model in Arthur Piver's "Advanced Amateur" (AA) series of cruising trimarans, designed in the mid-to-late 1960s. This series represented Piver's evolved thinking: incorporating more sophisticated, hydrodynamic hull shapes (double chines for better plywood forming, rounded central hulls, and sharp deep-V amas/floats for lift, reduced drag, and wave-piercing efficiency) while keeping construction simplified for skilled amateur or semi-professional builders using marine plywood sheathed in fiberglass. It was aimed at serious offshore/bluewater cruising with greater payload (about 20% more than standard Piver designs), comfort, and performance. The AA-48 was marketed as a capable, lightweight ocean voyager suitable for extended passages with a small crew (ideal for 2–6 people, emphasizing minimalism for long-range efficiency). Like other AA models, it featured demountable beams for trailering/transport (reduced width ~8–10 ft for road use) and the signature Piver unsinkability via foam flotation.
