Pirat (Piraten Klasse)

Pirat (Piraten Klasse)

Description

The Pirat (also known as the Piratenklasse or Pirate class in English) is a classic German two-person dinghy designed for youth and club racing. It's a hiking double-hander (no trapeze) that's been popular since the 1930s, especially in Germany, where it remains one of the most active one-design classes with hundreds of participants in rankings and events. Designed in 1934 by German boat builder and naval architect Carl Martens (who won a design competition for it), the first boats were built in 1935. Originally constructed in solid wood, fiberglass (GRP) hulls were introduced in the 1960s, with some sandwich construction later. Various builders have produced them over the decades (no single dominant manufacturer like in mass-produced classes), allowing for both wooden and modern plastic versions.
