Olson 911-S
Description
The Olson 911 (also known as Olson 911 S or Olson 911 SE in variants) is a high-performance American MORC (Midget Ocean Racing Club) racer-cruiser designed by Carl Schumacher (a California-based naval architect famous for designs like the Express 37 and Schumacher 30). It originated from the same molds as the Capo 30 (built by Westerly Marine in Costa Mesa, CA), with the first ~26 hulls constructed by Pacific Boat Works (Santa Cruz, CA) in the mid-1980s as glass sandwich (cored) for lightweight stiffness (~7,500 lb displacement). Production then shifted to Ericson Yachts (Irvine, CA) from 1987 to 1990, who built the majority (~50–52 hulls total across builders) as the Olson 911 S/SE with solid laminate hulls (adding ~1,000–2,000 lb for durability, ~8,100–8,680 lb displacement), updated cockpit/transom, and minor refinements. The SE variant (Ericson-built) often included enhanced fittings, hardware, and interior tweaks. It's renowned for exceptional upwind ability, balanced handling, speed in moderate winds, and surprising cruising comfort (compact but livable interior with 4–5 berths, galley, heads)—competitive in MORC/PHRF racing (ratings ~90–120) while suitable for weekend/coastal use. Owners call it a "sweet little all-around boat" with great pedigree.
