Newport 31
Description
The Newport 31 is a compact American fiberglass cruiser built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by renowned naval architect Gary Mull. Production was short-lived, starting in 1987 and ending the same year (or possibly extending slightly into 1988 based on surviving examples), with a limited run (likely low hundreds of hulls, given the brief production and rarity compared to longer Newport series like the 30 or 28). It features a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder for balanced handling and good upwind performance, solid GRP construction emphasizing spacious interior volume for its size (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads, and decent storage/tankage), inboard auxiliary (often diesel, e.g., 18 hp Universal or similar), and a reputation as a forgiving, stable coastal cruiser with solid cruising amenities—roomy, easy to sail, and well-suited for family weekend/overnight trips or light offshore use, though not a heavy bluewater boat (Capsize Screening ~2.0 range).
