Melonseed
Description
The Melonseed Gunning Skiff was originally designed by Captain Joe Liener of Liener Boats in New Jersey in the early 1980s as a modern, fiberglass reproduction of the historic Barnegat Bay melonseed duck-hunting skiffs from the 19th century. Liener’s design revived the classic low-profile, double-ended, sprit-rigged hull (typically 13–14 ft LOA, ~4 ft beam, shallow draft) with a spritsail of ~60–70 ft², optimized for stealthy gunning in marshes and quiet sailing in shallow bays. His company built hundreds in fiberglass, making the Melonseed a cult favorite among traditional sailors.
