Luger 16 Leeward
Description
The Luger Leeward 16 is a classic American fiberglass sailing dinghy designed and built by Luger Industries in Burnsville, Minnesota, starting in 1962. Founded by brothers Ren and Orm Luger, the company specialized in affordable kit boats for amateur builders, ranging from 8 to 35 feet, and claimed to be the "world's largest manufacturer of kit boats." The Leeward 16 was produced as a simple kit (assembly time estimated at 10–15 hours), making it accessible for families or beginners learning to sail. With its centerboard configuration, modest sail plan, and small cuddy cabin, it's a versatile day-sailer and weekender for lakes, rivers, or sheltered coastal waters—offering plenty of cockpit space for 4–6 people while keeping things dry and stable. Production continued until Luger Industries closed in 1987, with around 100–200 hulls built.
