Long John 21 fish dory
Description
The Long John (often called the Long John 21' or Long John 21' 9") is a classic outboard-powered fishing/work dory designed by the legendary American boat designer Robert D. "Pete" Culler in the mid-20th century. It's featured in the comprehensive book Pete Culler's Boats: The Complete Design Catalog (2010 edition, pp. 108-113) and preserved in collections like Mystic Seaport. This design is a practical, no-nonsense workboat inspired by traditional New England dories—long, narrow, flat-bottomed with high sides for stability and load-carrying—but adapted for modern outboard use with a motor well and optional small sailing rig. It's built for rugged coastal fishing, lobstering, clamming, or general utility work, emphasizing simplicity, seaworthiness, and ease of handling.
