J/90
Description
The J/90 is a high-performance, lightweight daysailer/racer designed by Rod Johnstone of J/Boats and built by J/Boats (in collaboration with Tillotson-Pearson/TPI Composites) in the United States. Introduced in the late 1990s (around 1998), it was a short-lived, limited-production model (produced for only about 1 year, with very few hulls built—estimates suggest single digits to low dozens at most, as it never gained widespread popularity or a one-design class). Constructed using advanced materials (carbon fiber hull/deck, foam core, carbon rig/mast/boom, substantial lead/bronze bulb keel, and spade rudder), it emphasizes extreme lightness (around 3,100–3,300 lb displacement on a 27 ft waterline), high stability for its size, easy short-handed sailing, and blistering performance—described as one of the lightest sailboats per waterline length in its era, with excellent speed in light to moderate winds and fun, responsive handling for daysailing, club racing, or single-handed events (e.g., examples like "Lucky Duck" competing in Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club races). It features a fractional sloop rig with asymmetric spinnaker options, open cockpit layout, minimal accommodations (focused on performance over cruising comfort), and durability suited to competitive or recreational use. The model didn't "take off" commercially due to its high cost (carbon construction premium), niche appeal (pure race-oriented without broad family/cruising versatility), and lack of a critical mass for one-design fleets, leading to its quick discontinuation—though surviving boats are rare gems praised for being high-tech yet fun and forgiving.
