J/32

Description

The J/32 is an American performance-oriented cruising sailboat designed by Alan Johnstone (of the J/Boats family) and built by J/Boats in partnership with Tillotson-Pearson (later TPI Composites) in the United States, using advanced SCRIMP resin infusion construction over balsa core for lightweight strength and durability (with a 10-year hull warranty). Introduced in 1996 and produced through 2003 (last hull #85), it totals just 85 boats built, reflecting its niche status as a compact cruiser that delivers the comfort, styling, and performance typically found in much larger yachts (e.g., classic 40-foot sloops). It features a fractional sloop rig, easily driven hull with smooth sheerline and low freeboard for reduced wind resistance and easy boarding, deep fin keel with bulb (or optional shoal draft), spade rudder for responsive handling, and a practical interior for couples/small families (good headroom, efficient galley, berths, and storage) while prioritizing sailing enjoyment—responsive, stable, stiff, and fun in light to moderate winds, with excellent short-handed capability. It's often praised for blending racer-like agility with genuine cruising comfort, low heeling, and minimal need for auxiliary power (standard Yanmar diesel ~27–30 hp).
