J/122
Description
The J/122 (with an enhanced J/122E variant introduced around 2014) is a high-performance 40-foot cruiser-racer designed by Alan Johnstone (of the J/Boats family) and built by J/Boats (primarily through J/Europe in France for European production, with some US involvement). Launched in 2007–2008, it combines offshore-capable cruising comfort with competitive racing prowess under IRC/ORC rules—featuring a narrow, sleek hull for reduced wetted surface and excellent upwind speed, a fractional sloop rig with carbon spar options, a deep fin keel with lead bulb (optimized low VCG for stability), spade rudder, infusion-molded sandwich construction (uni/multi-directional fiberglass, balsa core, vinylester resin via SCRIMP process for lightness/strength), twin helms in some layouts, spacious cockpit, and refined accommodations (2–3 cabins, functional galley/head, and liveaboard suitability). It's praised for light-air acceleration (sailing near windspeed in under 7 knots), strong heavy-weather performance, easy short-handed handling (push-button controls, asymmetric spinnaker), and versatility for club racing, offshore events, or family cruising. Production has been semi-custom/limited (dozens built worldwide since introduction, with the J/122E update improving refinements like deck layout and systems; exact totals not publicly tracked but considered a niche performance model with active resale market).
