Irwin 38 - 2
Description
The Irwin 38 Mk II is a fiberglass center-cockpit cruising sailboat designed by naval architect Ted Irwin and built by Irwin Yachts from 1984 to 1989. Part of the Irwin 38 series (which began in 1971 with the original Mk I), the Mk II introduced refinements like an updated rig for better upwind performance, improved interior layouts for enhanced ventilation and light, and optional wing or fin keels for versatility. Primarily rigged as a masthead sloop (with cutter options), it balances coastal cruising comfort with modest racing capability, making it suitable for family weekends, liveaboard use, or short offshore passages like Florida to the Bahamas. With a moderate displacement and spacious accommodations, it's praised for livability but critiqued for average speed in light air. Approximately 150-200 Mk II hulls were produced, reflecting Irwin's focus on affordable, roomy cruisers.
