Description
The Hughes 29 is a Canadian fiberglass masthead sloop designed by Howard Hughes (no relation to the aviator) as a capable cruiser-racer, emphasizing stability, reasonable performance, and comfortable accommodations for coastal and occasional offshore use, with production by Hughes Boat Works Ltd. in Huron Park (Centralia), Ontario, Canada, starting around 1975 (with some sources noting early hulls from the late 1960s/early 1970s era). Built with solid fiberglass construction for durability and low maintenance, it features a fin keel and spade rudder (or minor variations in some hulls), moderate displacement for good righting capability and stiffness after initial heel, a relatively narrow beam for its era leading to responsive handling in varied conditions, and interior layout suitable for family cruising with standing headroom and basic galley/berths. Approximately 190–200 boats were built (estimates vary slightly across sources, with some owners citing over 200), before the company transitioned and eventually ceased operations in the late 1980s/early 1990s amid industry changes.
