HARTLEY TS 16 GAFF RIG VERSION

HARTLEY TS 16 GAFF RIG VERSION

Description

The Hartley TS-16 Gaff Rig Version is an official alternative rig option for Richard Hartley's iconic trailer-sailer, explicitly offered in the plans from hartley-boats.com alongside the standard fractional Bermudan sloop—allowing builders to choose a traditional four-sided gaff mainsail for a classic look, easier short-handed reefing, and potentially lower windage aloft, though at the cost of slightly reduced upwind efficiency compared to the high-aspect Bermudan. The gaff plans include scaled mast (shorter, often wood or aluminum), boom, gaff spar (~10–12 ft estimated, with peak halyard to masthead), and balanced sail area (~160–180 sq ft total, maintaining CE/CLR for the hull); a bowsprit (~4–6 ft) is recommended for jib balance, and carbon-fiber gaffs are popular modern upgrades for weight savings.
