Hartley 35 Lively Trimaran
Description
The Hartley 35 Lively (officially the Lively 35 Cruising Trimaran) is a classic cruising trimaran designed by Richard Hartley (founder of Hartley Boats in New Zealand). It's part of the long-running "Lively" series of multihull plans from the 1960s–1970s era, with the 35 being the original/full-size "Lively" model (later scaled down to versions like the Lively 28 for easier building/trailering). Plans are still available directly from Hartley Boats for amateur or professional construction in plywood (often glass-sheathed for durability) or as molds for GRP/FRP fiberglass—making it popular among DIY builders seeking affordable, seaworthy multihulls. This design prioritizes comfortable cruising over racing: wide overall beam for stability, shallow draft for access to anchorages, good payload for gear/provisions, and enough sail area for decent performance in moderate winds. It's known for solid bluewater capability (some owners have logged long passages, like East Africa to Med), liveaboard potential, and easy handling as a family/couple cruiser. The main hull provides living space, while the amas (floats) fold or detach for trailering/storage in some builds, though most are assembled permanently at launch.
