Hans Christian 33 (Hansa 33)
Description
The Hansa 33 (more commonly known as the Hans Christian 33 or Hans Christian 33 Traditional / 33T) is a Taiwanese-built classic bluewater cruiser designed by Harwood Ives and first produced in 1980 by Hans Christian Yachts, initially at Hansa Yachts und Schiffbau (Taiwan) through 1987, then Shin Fa Industries (Taipei, Taiwan) from 1988 onward (later available as the Traditional 33 via Pantawee Marine Ltd.), with around 165–200 hulls built. This heavy-displacement, full-keel (long keel) cutter emphasizes traditional aesthetics, exceptional seaworthiness, and comfortable offshore/liveaboard capability—featuring a double-ender hull with bowsprit, solid fiberglass construction (some early Hansa builds with solid GRP decks, later Shin Fa often with isolated cored sections), encapsulated iron ballast, teak decks/exterior wood (requiring maintenance), and a warm, opulent interior (teak/mahogany joinery, berths for 4–6, spacious saloon/galley, head, and good storage/headroom) that owners describe as "lovely to look at and adore." It's not fast by modern standards but excels in steady, safe progress under sail or power, with a dry ride, forgiving motion in heavy weather, and proven ocean-crossing ability (many circumnavigations and long passages logged)
