Hagar 28 (Cutter Rig)
Description
The Hagar 28 (also styled as HAGAR) is a compact, diesel-powered junk-rigged cutter designed by American naval architect George Buehler for amateur or professional construction, emphasizing simplicity, seaworthiness, and low-cost offshore cruising in a trailerable package. Introduced in the 1990s as part of Buehler's "Diesel Duck"-inspired series of practical, no-frills voyagers, it's built with steel hull (below waterline) and plywood/steel superstructure, often owner-completed for budgets under $50,000 (historical estimates). Buehler later updated the design into the Emily 28, recommending it over Hagar for improved stiffness and interior volume, but several Hagars were built and launched (e.g., one in Port Angeles, WA, in 2011).
