Gulf 27
Description
The Gulf 27, designed and produced by Capital Yachts in Harbor City, California, from 1970 to 1988 with around 200 hulls built, is a compact, trailerable cruiser emphasizing affordability, stability, and versatility for coastal or weekend sailing, serving as the precursor to the elongated Gulf 29 introduced in 1982. Measuring 27 feet 1 inch LOA with a 21-foot-6-inch LWL, 8-foot beam, 4,400-pound displacement, and 1,750 pounds of internal lead ballast yielding a solid .40 ballast/displacement ratio for stiffness and self-righting in gusts up to 25 knots, it features a fixed fin keel drawing 4 feet 3 inches (or optional shoal-draft wing keel at 3 feet 9 inches) and a masthead sloop rig with 360 square feet of sail area—delivering a SA/D ratio of 15.8 (rising to 18.9 with a 135% genoa) for moderate performance (PHRF around 198) at a 6.3-knot hull speed, though its D/L ratio of 270 classifies it as a light cruiser suited more to bays than bluewater passages.
