Grey Wolf
Description
The Gray Wolf is a unique, high-performance custom wooden sailboat designed by Rodger Martin (Rodger Martin Yacht Design) and built in 1995 by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Camden, Maine. It's a one-off 40-foot (12.19 m) cold-molded cedar racer/cruiser commissioned for an experienced architect and circumnavigator owner, blending classic American workboat/yacht aesthetics with cutting-edge (for the 1990s) performance features like water ballast, a planing-capable hull, and a freestanding (unstayed) rig. The boat gained fame for winning the Race to Alaska (R2AK) in 2023 (and possibly other events), showcasing its speed and seaworthiness in challenging conditions. It's celebrated for its innovative design—effective use of water ballast for stability/speed trade-offs, a deep fin keel for upwind prowess, and a planing hull shape that allows surfing downwind—making it fast, safe, and versatile for both ocean racing and cruising. The cold-molded wooden construction (light yet strong) gives it a timeless, elegant look with modern capabilities.
