Grampian 7.9 Discovery
Description
The Grampian Discovery 7.9, a rare raised-deck variant of the popular Grampian 26 designed by Scottish naval architect Alex McGruer and produced in limited numbers (fewer than 20 hulls) by Grampian Marine in Oakville, Ontario, from 1975 to 1977—with a handful more completed post-bankruptcy using acquired molds by a Seaforth, Ontario builder—enhances the original's family-cruising virtues with improved headroom and visibility for taller sailors or those preferring a more modern profile. Measuring 25 feet 11 inches LOA with an 8-foot-4-inch beam, 21-foot-9-inch waterline, 5,600-pound displacement, and 2,520 pounds of ballast yielding a high .45 ballast/displacement ratio for stiffness and self-righting, it features a fixed fin keel drawing 4 feet (or optional centerboard at 2 feet 10 inches up/6 feet 6 inches down) and a masthead sloop rig delivering 345 square feet of sail area for balanced coastal performance (PHRF around 210–228, SA/D of 15.5, D/L of 221 classifying it as a light cruiser/offshore racer). Built with the builder's signature hand-laid fiberglass for durability, the elevated coachroof provides 6 feet 6 inches of standing headroom throughout, a spacious V-berth forward, enclosed head, U-shaped galley, convertible dinette, and quarter berth for four, plus a large cockpit and modest tanks (20 gallons water, 9 gallons fuel).
