Grampian 34 Sloop
Description
The Grampian 34 Sloop, the original iteration of Grampian Marine's largest model introduced around 1972 in Oakville, Ontario, is a seaworthy adaptation of Peter Ibold Nabor's British Triangle 32 design, built in limited numbers (fewer than 100 hulls) before the company's 1977 closure and distinct from the later G2-34 variant. Measuring 32 feet 6 inches LOA, 28 feet LWL, 9 feet 6 inches beam, with 11,200 pounds displacement and 4,850 pounds external lead ballast for a solid .43 ballast/displacement ratio ensuring stiffness and quick recovery from knockdowns, it employs a modified full keel drawing 5 feet (or shoal-draft 4 feet) and skeg-hung rudder paired with a masthead sloop rig offering 430 square feet of sail area—yielding a SA/D of 13.7 and PHRF around 162 for reliable coastal or offshore performance, though its D/L ratio of 290 limits it to a 7-knot hull speed. Constructed with thick hand-laid fiberglass for bluewater toughness, the center-cockpit layout provides 6 feet of headroom, a V-berth forward, U-shaped galley, convertible settees, enclosed head, and quarter berth for four, with modest tanks (30 gallons water, 25 gallons fuel) and typical 30-hp diesel inboards like Perkins or Yanmar. Post-Grampian, molds enabled a few Seaforth 34s.
