Grampian 30 Tall
Description
The Grampian 30 Tall Rig is a performance-oriented variant of Alex McGruer’s standard Grampian 30, introduced around 1974 by Grampian Marine to boost light-air speed and appeal to racers, featuring a taller masthead sloop rig that adds approximately 3–4 feet to the standard mast height (total I-dimension around 38–39 feet vs. 35 feet), increasing sail area from 390 sq ft to roughly 430–440 sq ft with a larger mainsail and overlapping genoa. This modification lowers the PHRF rating to around 168–174 (vs. 180 for the standard rig), improves the SA/D ratio to ~16, and enhances upwind performance in moderate conditions while retaining the boat’s stable, full-keel or centerboard underbody, 8,600-pound displacement, and spacious interior. Built in limited numbers before Grampian’s 1977 closure, the Tall Rig is prized on the used market for its balance of cruising comfort and competitive edge, though it requires attentive sail handling in heavy air due to increased heeling moment; owners often pair it with a roller-furling headsail and consider mast-step reinforcement during surveys.
