Gannet
Description
The Gannet is a spirited 14'5" planning dinghy designed by the acclaimed Australian-Scottish naval architect Iain Oughtred in the late 1980s, intended as a versatile daysailer that blends the elegant lines of a traditional clinker-built tender with the performance of a lightweight racer. Primarily a home-build project using glued-lapstrake plywood construction, it was created for solo or small-family outings, offering responsive handling, planning speeds up to 15–20 knots in gusts, and the ability to carry 3–4 adults comfortably while maintaining stability through its wide beam and low wetted surface. Plans are available from distributors like Straydog Wooden Boats or Duckworks, emphasizing Oughtred's signature Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics with variations in decking (open, half-decked, or recessed) and rigging (gunter sloop or cat rig); only a handful have been built worldwide due to its niche appeal,
