Galion 22
Description
The Galion 22 (sometimes spelled "Gallion") is a compact, classic British trailerable cruiser-racer renowned for its seaworthiness, simplicity, and surprising performance in its era. Designed by Ian Hannay (often credited as Haney in some sources) as a pocket yacht for solo or family use, it features a long keel for stability and directional control, making it forgiving for beginners while capable of offshore jaunts. Built primarily in fiberglass (GRP) from 1967 to the early 1970s, around 100–200 units were produced, with a focus on coastal cruising, day sailing, and light racing. At 22 feet, it's lightweight (under 3,500 lbs.), easily towed by a midsize vehicle, and sleeps 2–4 in a cozy interior. Ian Hannay, a Scottish naval architect and keen racer, penned the Galion 22 in 1966–1967 to create an affordable, no-compromise small cruiser that could compete in offshore events like the Jersey Offshore Group (JOG) races. The prototype launched in 1967 from Deacons Boat Yard in Bursledon, UK, with production following at Deacons and later Robert Ives Boatyard in Essex. Hannay himself skippered the first boat to victory in the 1968 Round the Island Race (Isle of Wight) and the JOG Single-Handed Race, proving its mettle in 20+ knot winds—remarkable for a 22-footer.
