Freya 39

Freya 39

Description

The Freya 39 is a legendary bluewater cruiser designed by Australian naval architect Trygve Halvorsen (from the famous Halvorsen yacht-building family), inspired by the original wooden yacht Freya that made history as the only boat to win three consecutive Sydney-Hobart Races (1962–1964). The production Freya 39, often built as a fiberglass (with some steel or wood versions) long-keel cutter or sloop, was primarily constructed by Gannon Yachts in Northern California starting in the late 1970s/early 1980s (with earlier roots in Australia; many were owner-completed kits or semi-custom). It's renowned for exceptional seaworthiness, fast passagemaking, directional stability from its full/long keel and skeg-hung rudder, and proven offshore credentials—ideal for serious cruising or circumnavigations, with a practical interior (V-berth forward, saloon, galley, head, quarter berths sleeping 6 comfortably) and large sail area for performance in light winds. Production was limited (dozens of hulls, many owner-finished), and it's celebrated in cruising communities for its strength, speed, and classic lines—often compared favorably to boats like the Ericson 39B for bluewater potential.
