Frers 45 Tall Rig (Frers Competition)

Frers 45 Tall Rig (Frers Competition)

Description

The Frers 45 Tall Rig (also referred to as "Frers 45 Tall," "FRERS 45 TALL CARROLL," or "Competition" version in sailmaker databases and owner discussions) is a high-performance variant of the Frers 45 cruiser-racer designed by renowned Argentine naval architect German Frers and built by Carroll Marine in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA, starting in 1989–1990. This tall rig configuration features an increased mast height and adjusted sail dimensions for greater sail area and power, enhancing light-to-moderate wind performance, acceleration, and reaching/downwind speed compared to the standard rig—ideal for competitive racing under rules like IMS/IOR while retaining dual-purpose cruising capability. The boat uses fiberglass construction, a deep fin keel with spade rudder, masthead sloop rig (often triple spreader), and medium displacement for lively, balanced handling with excellent upwind pointing and seaworthiness for coastal/offshore use. It includes a spacious teak-trimmed interior (V-berth forward, saloon, galley, head, aft cabin/quarter berths sleeping 6–8+), though some race-oriented hulls prioritize weight savings over comfort. Production was very limited (likely 10–20 hulls total for the Frers 45 series, with tall rig on select "Competition" versions like hull #1 "Brigadoon VI"), making it a rare classic from the early '90s era; owners praise its build quality on early hulls, rewarding sailing, and versatility, though Carroll Marine boats from this period can have gelcoat or structural concerns in later examples.
