Frers 43 Tall Rig
Description
The Frers 43 Tall Rig (sometimes denoted as "Frers 43 Tall" or "TR" in sailmaker databases like FX Sails or Good Old Boat) is a performance-enhanced variant of the Frers 43, a classic cruiser-racer designed by renowned Argentine naval architect German Frers. This model, dating primarily to the late 1980s (first built around 1988), was produced in limited numbers by various custom or semi-custom yards (e.g., Cookson Boats in New Zealand for racers like "Shockwave", Petronio influences, or other builders; not a high-volume Carroll Marine series production). It features fiberglass construction, a fin keel with spade rudder, masthead sloop rig (often triple-spreader), and medium-to-light displacement for excellent speed, acceleration in light air, strong reaching/running, and competitive IOR/IMS heritage (e.g., boats like "Shockwave", "Bandido Bandido", or "Jaguar" raced successfully in events like Clipper Cup or modern IRC). The tall rig option increases sail area and power for better performance in moderate-to-light winds compared to the standard rig, while retaining seaworthiness for offshore/coastal racing or fast cruising; interiors are practical (V-berth forward, saloon, galley, head, quarter berths sleeping 6+), with elegant Frers lines and rewarding handling that favors skilled trim.
