Freedom 40 Ac

Description

The Freedom 40 AC (Aft Cockpit), a pioneering fractional sloop designed by Gary Mull and Gary Hoyt and built by Tillotson-Pearson (TPI) in Rhode Island from 1987 to 1994, elevated the Freedom ethos of rig simplicity to blue water scale with its unstayed carbon-fiber masts ditching standing rigging entirely for low-friction, cockpit-managed sailing in a versatile 40-foot hull suited to coastal hops or ocean crossings. Boasting an LOA of 39'6", 12'11" beam, 13,500 lbs displacement, and 5,400 lbs of lead ballast in a 6'9" fin keel (or 4'11" shoal with winglets), the balsa-cored, SCRIMP-infused fiberglass construction yields a SA/D ratio of ~17, steady 7-knot passages in 12–15 knots, and a Comfort Ratio near 35 for sea kindly behavior, with the flexible spar enhancing pointing ability (up to 35 degrees apparent) and damping gusts for autopilot bliss. The thoughtful interior, with 6'5" headroom, sleeps five to six via an aft double cabin with en-suite head, U-galley to starboard, L-dinette opposite, nav station, and forward V-berth plus second head—bright and functional for liveaboard couples, though galley counter space is snug. Approximately 60 hulls were produced, many customized with carbon bowsprit for Code Zero reachers.

Custom sail calculations are not possible for this boat as no I, J, P and E dimensions are available.
