Uffa Fox Flying 25
Description
The Uffa Fox Flying 25 (often just called the Flying 25) is the largest in Uffa Fox's famous "Flying" series of open keelboats from the mid-20th century (post-Flying 15 era, around the 1950s–1960s). Designed by the legendary British naval architect Uffa Fox (1898–1972), it's a classic daysailer/racer with long overhangs, a deep fin keel, and a reputation for blistering speed—legend has it the original was so fast it "frightened some of the crew." Only a few were built originally (rare classics), but modern replicas (e.g., "Flying Fox" built in 2007 by Paul Woodman in Australia using composite materials) have revived interest, performing well in IRC/AMS handicaps and classic regattas. It's a fractional sloop (high-aspect rig for efficiency), open cockpit (no cabin—pure daysailer), and optimized for planing/reaching in fresh breeze. The 2007 replica ("Flying Fox") extended the mast by 2 ft for more sail area/power while keeping total area similar (~390–400 sq ft) and added modern tweaks like Profurl jib reefing and Vinylester/foam construction.
