Flint Dory
Description
The Flint Dory (also called the Flint skiff), designed by Australian naval architect Ross Lillistone around 2004–2010 for client Eddie Guy—an island dweller in Moreton Bay, Australia, who needed a dependable daily commuter rowboat to the mainland—was first built by Guy himself; plans were subsequently released through Duckworks Boat Builders Supply and the designer, resulting in many amateur-built examples worldwide (exact quantity untracked, though including documented multi-day rowing/sailing expeditions by builders such as Alec Morgan), all constructed via simple stitch-and-glue plywood methods from pre-computed developed panel shapes with no strongback, mold, or lofting required. Renowned for its versatility as a lightweight open boat optimized for rowing (with dual stations for proper trim), small outboards (up to 2 hp), and optional sailing, the Flint features sharp V-sections for excellent chop-handling without pounding, shallow draft for beaching, built-in watertight buoyancy compartments (providing over 400 lb flotation), self-rescuing capability even when swamped, and cartoppable portability while maintaining good tracking and stability for solo or tandem use.
