Description
The Finnsailer 38 (also listed as Fiskars Finnsailer 38 or Finnsailer 38 Motor sailor) is a robust, heavy-displacement masthead ketch (or sometimes sloop/cutter variant) motorsailer built by Oy Fiskars AB (Finland) starting in 1976. It was the flagship of Fiskars' short-lived fiberglass yacht line (1970s), positioned as a serious cruising yacht for demanding northern waters (North Sea/Baltic) with strong emphasis on safety, comfort, and motoring reliability in calms or adverse conditions. The design is credited to Oy Fiskars (the company's in-house team), with no prominent external naval architect like Hans Groop (who designed the Finnsailer 29/34) or Angus Primrose explicitly linked, though some sources note adaptations from traditional pilot/rescue boat influences. It's built like a tank: heavily laid-up fiberglass (often to Lloyd's standards), center cockpit for protection, large tanks, and a layout suited for long-term cruising or liveaboard (multiple berths, enclosed pilothouse/deck saloon elements in some, good storage). Owners describe it as "built without compromise" for North Sea rigors, with reassuring stability, dry cockpit, and excellent tracking—more motorsailer than pure sailer (modest sail area for easy handling, powerful engine for reliability).
