Etchells 22
Description
The Etchells 22 (renamed the Etchells Class in 1990) is an iconic one-design racing keelboat designed by American naval architect E.W. "Skip" Etchells in 1966. Originally conceived as a contender for the Olympic three-man keelboat class, it narrowly lost to the Soling but exploded in popularity due to its exceptional performance and tunability. Over 5,700 hulls have been built worldwide, making it one of the most successful one-design classes ever. The Etchells thrives in club racing, with fleets in 11 countries, and is prized for its "heavenly" responsiveness—described as "the boat they sail in heaven" for its balance of speed, pointing ability, and forgiveness. It's a strict one-design, ensuring fair competition, and remains active in 2025 with events like the Etchells Worlds.
