Ericson 43
Description
The Ericson 43 is a rare, high-end blue water cruiser-racer designed by renowned naval architect Bruce Farr (of Farr Yacht Design fame) and built by Ericson Yachts in the late 1980s. Introduced around 1986–1987, it was positioned as a premium offshore performer, blending speed, stability, and luxurious accommodations for extended voyages. With its sleek lines, deep lead keel, and robust fiberglass construction, the Ericson 43 excels in heavy weather while offering comfortable living for 6–8 people. Only a handful were produced (estimated 5–10 hulls) before Ericson ceased operations in 1990, making it a collector's item today. The molds were acquired by Pacific Seacraft but never put into full production, preserving its scarcity. Ericson Yachts, founded in 1963 by Ray Handy in Costa Mesa, CA, rose to prominence in the 1970s–1980s with innovative designs from Bruce King and others, producing over 800 boats annually at its peak. The Ericson 43 emerged late in the company's history as a flagship model, drawing on Farr's expertise (pre-Farr 40 era) to create a "gentleman's yacht" for the IMS era—fast yet civilized. It was marketed for coastal and ocean racing, with early hulls competing in events like the Transpac Race. Financial woes hit Ericson in the late 1980s amid industry downturns; it was sold to Acquico in 1985 under Eugene Kohlmann, but operations halted in 1990.
