Currawong 30

Currawong 30

Description

The Currawong 30 is a classic Australian cruiser/racer (often classified as a Half Tonner under IOR rules), renowned for its strong performance, seaworthiness, and historical significance. It gained fame when a Currawong 30/31 (named Zeus II) won the corrected time in the 1981 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race — the smallest yacht ever to achieve this feat in that grueling event. The design emphasizes moderate displacement, good stability, and a balanced hull that excels in heavy weather while remaining competitive in club racing or coastal cruising. Designed by Peter Joubert (a Melbourne-based naval architect and engineering professor known for tough, seaworthy Australian yachts like the Brolga 33), it was built by Seaway Yachts / G. Baker in Australia (some sources note Geoff Baker or his foreman after his passing). First built around 1971 (with early hulls like the original Currawong launched in 1973–1974 from the mould). Production Quantities: Not precisely documented in major sources, but as a semi-custom or limited-production Half Tonner, likely in the low hundreds or fewer (popular locally in the 1970s–1980s, with surviving examples still active in Australian waters).
