CSY 33 Cutter
Description
The CSY 33 (or CSY 33 Cutter, built by Caribbean Sailing Yachts / CSY) is a compact, solidly built bluewater-capable cutter from the late 1970s, known for its tank-like construction, spacious interior (often called "huge" for a 33-footer), and surprising seaworthiness. Owners frequently describe it as one of the toughest small cruisers of its era — solid fiberglass from stem to stern (no coring in hull or deck), heavy displacement for stability, and a cutter rig for easy shorthanded sail handling in varied conditions. It's not a lightweight racer but excels as a reliable, comfortable passagemaker or liveaboard for couples (or small crews), with good motion comfort and low capsize risk. Many have completed offshore passages, and it's praised for holding up well in heavy weather. Designed by Peter Schmitt (a naval architect associated with CSY designs), it was produced from 1978 to 1981 (some sources say up to 1982). It evolved from an earlier CSY model, the Carib 33 (similar hull but lower coachroof profile). Also sometimes called the Cygnet 33. Shallow-draft and deeper-draft variants exist. Production Quantities: 59 hulls built (per sailboatdata.com; a limited run, contributing to its rarity today).
