Core Sound 17
Description
The Core Sound 17 (CS 17) is a lightweight, high-performance cat-ketch sailboat designed by Graham Byrnes of B&B Yacht Designs in Beaufort, North Carolina. Introduced in the early 2000s as B&B's first kit boat, it's a development of Byrnes' earlier Bay River Skiff 17 and Spindrift 10, blending traditional North Carolina skiff influences with modern plywood construction. The CS 17 is renowned for its speed, stability, and versatility—excelling in shallow waters, beach launching, and long-distance adventures like the Texas 200 or Everglades Challenge races. With nearly 400 plans and kits sold, it's a favorite among amateur builders for its "stitch-and-glue" method, freestanding masts, and optional water ballast for enhanced righting moment. An updated Mark 3 (Mk3) version, introduced around 2016, features refined hull lines for better speed and upwind performance, refined deck beams, and easier CNC-cut kits.
