Compass Harbor Pram

Description

The Compass Harbor Pram is a small, versatile wooden boat designed by Brooks Boats Designs, ideal for rowing and sailing, particularly for kids or beginners. Measuring about 8’8” in length, it’s light (80–95 lbs. depending on materials) and stable, with a narrow flat bottom and generous rocker for easy rowing and good handling in choppy waters. Its glued-lapstrake construction simplifies building, using high-quality marine plywood (5mm or 6mm for planking, 6mm or 9mm for the bottom), and it features a bow transom that reduces plank twist, making it beginner-friendly for builders. The boat can carry one adult or two kids, supports a 2HP outboard, and is easily cartopped or trailered. The sail rig, a highlight of the design, combines a traditional batwing sail (inspired by old sailing canoes) with modern fully battened, square-topped sails for a balance of aesthetics and performance. It’s described as fun, fast, and particularly suited for kids learning to sail. The plans include detailed patterns for every part, making it an accessible project for first-time builders, with the option to start with the rowing version and add the sailing rig later. While kits are not currently available, Brooks Boats may consider producing them if demand grows.

Custom sail calculations are not possible for this boat as no I, J, P and E dimensions are available.
