Chrysler 22 Tall Rig
Description
Designed by naval architect Halsey Herreshoff (known for performance-oriented yachts like the Freedom 40), the Chrysler 22 was introduced in 1975 as part of Chrysler's expansion into sailboats, following models like the Buccaneer 18. It was produced by Chrysler Marine in Plano, Texas, until around 1978-1979, with an estimated several hundred units built. Chrysler, primarily an automaker, entered boating in the 1950s with powerboats and briefly excelled in affordable fiberglass sailboats before selling off its marine division in the early 1980s amid corporate restructuring. The molds were acquired by TMI (renaming it the C-22 or T-22 Sandpiper) and later Starwind/Wellcraft, with limited post-Chrysler production before the assets moved to Brazil. Today, the boat is supported by active owner groups like the Chrysler Sailing Association and Chrysler Sailors, which host regattas, provide technical resources, and facilitate parts sourcing.
