Description
The Byte CII is an advanced version of the original Byte dinghy, a single-handed one-design racing sailboat designed by Ian Bruce in 1988 and updated in 2004 by Performance Sailcraft Australasia (PSA). Tailored for lighter sailors (optimum weight 100-145 lbs. / 45-66 kg), it’s a high-performance, World Sailing-recognized class used in the Girls’ One-Person Dinghy event at the Youth Sailing World Championships (alongside the Laser Radial). The CII enhances the original Byte with a larger sail (73 sq ft vs. 58 sq ft), a 2:1 halyard system, and carbon-fiber mast/boom extensions for better control, making it ideal for competitive juniors, women, or small adults on lakes, rivers, or protected coastal waters. Its hard-chine fiberglass hull ensures responsive planning and forgiving handling, bridging the gap between the Optimist (for younger sailors) and the more demanding Laser. Over 2,000 Bytes (including CIIs) have been built, with active fleets in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, supported by the International Byte Class Association (IBCA). As of October 2025, it’s produced by PSA and dealers like Hartley Boats (UK), praised for its affordability, quick setup, and vibrant regatta scene.
