Brighton 3/4 Ton

Brighton 3/4 Ton

Description

The Brighton 3/4 Ton is a racing yacht designed by Doug Peterson in the mid-1970s to compete under the IOR (International Offshore Rule) in the Three-Quarter Ton class—a highly competitive rating category during that period. Built by Bristol Yachts in Bristol, Rhode Island, the Brighton 3/4 Ton was part of the yard’s limited-production, performance-oriented efforts that complemented its line of comfortable cruisers. Unlike Bristol’s traditional cruisers, this yacht featured a light-displacement, performance hull, fin keel, and spade rudder, marking a clear shift toward racing efficiency and modern hydrodynamics. Fiberglass construction with a balsa-cored deck offered strength and rigidity while keeping weight low. The fractional sloop rig, optimized by Peterson for the IOR rule, delivered strong upwind performance and agility in differing wind ranges. The design emphasized speed, balance, and close-winded ability, giving it competitive success at the club and regional level. Interiors were minimalist compared to Bristol’s cruising range but offered basic accommodations for racing crews, typically with pipe berths, a compact galley, and a small navigation station — just enough for offshore racing campaigns.
